Terril Guy
I came back to painting later in life, after many years away from a paintbrush. Creativity has become a way for me to slow down, relax, and be fully present. When I’m painting, my mind settles and I feel more connected to myself.
I’m drawn to animals because of their energy, movement, and spirit. There’s something honest and alive in them that I love trying to capture. My work is intuitive rather than exact. I enjoy working with acrylic, watercolour, pastel, and mixed media, often bringing materials together in whatever way feels right at the time.
My style is more expressive than precise. I can be a little messy, although there’s also a perfectionist part of me that sometimes pauses if a piece isn’t going where I expect it to. I’ve learned to step back, trust the process, and return when it feels ready.
In recent years I’ve sold several paintings through local art groups, which has been incredibly encouraging, especially as I hadn’t painted since failing my Art A-level at school. Picking up a paintbrush again has felt like reconnecting with a part of myself I once believed I’d lost.
Alongside my art, I work as a therapist and coach, and I often encourage the people I work with to be creative. I believe creativity is a gentle and powerful way to let go of life’s pressures and reconnect with what matters.
