Tatiana Sorton
My journey into the art of wet-felting began quite accidentally during the recent pandemic lockdown. A chance encounter with this technique on social media sparked a deep interest, leading me to explore its possibilities. What started as a hobby has evolved into a passion for creating handcrafted textile interior objects and wearable art from wool and other fibres.
I explore the endless possibilities of wet felting and nuno felting to create contemporary fibre art that pushes the boundaries of texture, structure, and strength. By combining sheep wool, natural fibres, and textiles, I develop unique surfaces that embrace both tradition and innovation. My evolving practice now includes eco-printing and embroidery, further expanding the expressive potential of felt.
Guided by the philosophy of wabi-sabi, I find beauty in imperfection, authenticity, and the raw essence of natural materials. Currently, I am deeply immersed in working with raw fleeces from rare British sheep breeds. Their natural colour variations and the intricate structures of their locks inspire meāeach fleece carrying a story of heritage and craftsmanship. Through my work, I celebrate the tactile and decorative properties of fibre, creating pieces that invite touch, contemplation, and connection to the natural world.
