Ric Lynn
I grew up on the Sussex coast in the late 1960s, where the freedom of exploring the chalk cliffs and downs around the Seven Sisters shaped my earliest sense of place. The sights, sounds, and smells of that coastline became part of my identity. More recently, I relocated to Cumbria, on the Solway Firth near the Scottish border, where I am forging new connections with a different landscape and way of life.
My creative journey began with ceramics at Hastings College, later leading me to establish West Hill Pottery in Hastings Old Town in 2019. Producing both tableware and decorative pieces, I sought to balance function with artistic expression. My studies for an MA in Creative Practice at Cumbria University, where I now serve as Potter in Residence, expanded this exploration.
My practice sits at the meeting point of craft and art, where the functional becomes narrative. Childhood memories of the 1960s and 70s inform much of my visual language, with nostalgia serving as a catalyst for style and meaning. By experimenting with materials, colour, and surface, I create works with an aged patina that evoke memory, while reflecting on consumer culture, its accelerating pace, and the fragile balance between past and present.
