Maria Burton

Emotionally immersed in the dramatic Lake District, Scottish and Northumbrian landscapes, Maria works primarily from memory, studies and sketches to create evocative paintings that represent extraordinary moments in time and place.

"Throughout 2017, a turning point in her career, Maria studied a Diploma at the Norfolk Painting School under Martin Kinnear. A great work ethic became embedded under the inspiring tuition and leadership of Martin. She considers learning as a lifelong adventure!

"In 2018, Maria self published ‘Catching Constant Change’ a 120 page hardback book which is available on her website, at Rheged, the EVAN Gallery, Penrith and at Northern Lights Gallery, Keswick. (Not on Amazon!)

Here, alongside photographs of her work, she offers the reader descriptive text and prose which gives an insight into places, process and her deep love of the natural world and painting.

In 2019, Maria completed the Drawing Course at the Leith School of Art, Edinburgh, under Jane Couroussopoulos. Throughout the following years, Maria has developed her own practice and has continued studies online with Martin Kinnear, under the mentorship of Jane Couroussopoulos and with Evolve Art Education.

In 2021, Maria exhibited a solo show of landscapes at the Northern Lights Gallery in Keswick where she is represented on a permanent basis alongside other artists. In 2018, Maria was one of the Northern Lights Gallery selected artists whose work was taken to the Edinburgh Arts Fair and one of the gallery’s five selected painters at the Manchester Arts Fair in 2021.
