Kathy Kemp
I have developed my art practice at an age when I have already worked out who I am, my core beliefs and I see myself reflected authentically in my work, both through what I choose to paint as well as the how. My paintings are colourful, bold, expressive, energetic and bit wild and messy, they probably wear their heart on their sleeve, using oil for observational studies and a mixture of acrylic and soft pastels for the immediacy of more abstracted landscapes.
As an environmentalist, I paint the joy I see in the often overlooked: unkempt verges; scruffy seedheads in a winter garden; lichen clinging to a stick. Finding joy and meaning in what is around me, I strive for my paintings to balance between the complexity and diversity of the natural world and its fragility.
For me, the natural world transcends its intrinsic value. Rather than seeing the natural world through the fallibly human lens of consumerism as something we can unilaterally benefit from, I see it as something that we are indistinguishably a part of. The irony of finding inspiration here is not lost on me.
