Joe Dias M.A. Contemporary Fine Art
My practice as an artist is inspired by the many years that my family have been living and working around the Solway Firth in Northern Cumberland.
The work reflects a sense of place, belonging and history. The estuary itself is an area of beauty and danger ruled by the immediacy of ebbing and flooding tides. In contrast to this immediacy is the estuary's slow forming and rich history which envelops everything we see.
I explore the story between the permanence and decay of history as well as how tidal movement creates ambiguity about which places are truly safe.
My time at Carlisle and then Newcastle Art College was spent working across sculpture, printmaking and finally painting which has meant that I don’t always exclusively work with paint. The images I produce will sometimes incorporate found objects, printing techniques and the use of the Solway tide sand alongside oils and watercolours.
