Anne Blankson-Hemans
I’m a figurative and landscape painter working primarily in oils. My work explores themes of identity, belonging, and place—often centring Black people in everyday scenes that have historically excluded them. I’m interested in ordinary moments: a shared glance, a quiet gesture, a familiar street. These are the stories I aim to tell on canvas.
Since moving to Cumbria, landscape and plein air painting have become a vital part of my practice. Painting on location allows me to respond directly to the world around me—the shape of the land, the changing light, the feel of a place. I lead a monthly plein air group and find that regular outdoor painting feeds back into my studio work, sharpening my sense of composition and atmosphere.
Alongside painting, I’m involved in community arts projects across the region, working with schools, social groups, and local organisations. Whether I’m working alone or with others, my focus is on making art that’s honest, rooted, and open to conversation.
