Ursula Hurst
Ursula has been an illustrator of children’s books for many years and has written and illustrated Drawing Hope which won the Peoples Book Prize in 2021. Since moving from Lancashire to the Eden Valley she‘s been inspired by the fabulous local sheep to develop a new character, Swithbert Swaledale, and has enjoyed exhibiting her illustrations for the first time. Working on an iPad allows her to make changes and send work electronically but she’s hasn’t lost her love of drawing and painting for her personal work.
More recently, she’s begun working in acrylics, developing a body of work that draws inspiration from fairy tales and folklore. These paintings blend narrative with nostalgia, reimagining familiar stories and using costumes from local museums. This shift has allowed Ursula to explore a deeper visual language while still maintaining the storytelling thread that has always been at the heart of her creative practice.
