Vivienne Rumbold

I spent a wonderful year at Wetheriggs Pottery as an apprentice followed by studying A level pottery at Carlisle Art College.

I followed this by making domestic ware in the small studio I set up at my cottage.

Later I wanted to gain more knowledge and study at a higher level. I spent a year studying Access in Art and Design at Cumbria Institute of the Arts - a degree course followed.

I studied ceramics at the University of Cumbria and achieved BA Hons as a mature student.

I make red earthenware pots using both smooth and grogged clay.

My slips are from oxides and ball clay and I also use commercial underglaze velvets for decoration. Quite often both are used on the same piece or even mixed. These are applied by dipping, brushing, trailing, sponging, scraffito, and paper resist etc.

I fire to 1080 in an electric kiln. I love colour and my work demonstrates this.

I am inspired particularly by painters such and Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Howard Hodgkin and many others.

My decoration is often abstract and painterly for plates, tiles, and bowls - but for glazed planters and candle holders tends to be more by nature.
