Seamus Hanna

My art incorporates drawing, painting and collage, but sculpture is my principal medium. This builds upon my art training in Belfast and Leeds, and subsequent work within sculpture conservation. A continued interest in our environment, architecture, design and the relationship between materials, processes and technical solutions informs my work.

Using stone, wood, metals and plaster, I explore the interplay between form, space, volume, tension and balance. Current pieces are open constructions rather than carved from a mass, often using multiple linear elements, with the defined spaces between these being integral to and as important as the physical aspects.

I respond directly to the materials to hand and fabrication methods, which inevitably change the initial ideas and end result, and is essential to my creative process. Colour is also an important element within my work, and which ranges from large outdoor sculpture to smaller indoor pieces.
