Penny Smith

I studied Ceramics at Bath Academy of Art nearly 40 years ago and later taught art and ceramics in high school. Having recently moved to the beautiful Eden Valley, I have bought a kiln and wheel and am rediscovering my enjoyment of clay. My pieces are thrown, turned (my favourite process) and then decorated with oxides and carved, scraped or scratched. These are vessels but not necessarily functional. I am interested in form and surface but also enjoy sawdust firing and experimenting different clays and combustibles. My decoration tends to be intuitive rather than planned but is rooted in the natural word and the patterns and shapes within.
