A latecomer to a career in art, my formal art education began in 2011 with a course 'Life Painting in Oils' at Slade School of Art. Sales of work then funded two years at Leith School of Art where I was awarded the school's Figurative Painting Prize.
Earlier careers focused intensely on people (midwifery, teaching, therapy) and people continue to be a major focus today. I express portraits, life work and un-posed studies in oils or mixes of ink and paint. My approach attempts to create an engaging visual image expressing what I feel and experience of the subject in addition to recording what I see. My preference is to paint from direct observation (or base work on sketches and drawings from life) with photographs used as an additional resource.
Exhibitions by selection have included 'Upfront Gallery Open', 'Cumbrian Artist of the Year' Exhibitions and 'Lakes Artists' Summer' Exhibitions. My work has been shortlisted for 'Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize', 'Society of Women Artists' Prize' and 'Jackson's Painting Prize'.
