Gwen Bainbridge Ceramic Designer/Maker – Penrith, Cumbria
The everyday items Gwen grew up with, especially the 'best china' brought out for important visitors at tea-time and the domestic rituals of her Mum, a farming wife, together with the highly embroidered costumes of the Elizabethan period and Victorian botanical illustrations, have provided her with a wealth of inspiration.
Her making methods for these numerous influences have been carefully crafted to convey her textile processes through impression and inlay techniques from stitch on paper and textiles then into clay. Translating stitch into a ceramic context has allowed her to explore the ceramic surface in a unique way, providing contrasts in both touch and visual expression.
Although decorative, Gwen’s work is also functional due to the hardness of the clay she uses, offering great durability. Her work includes teapots, platters, jugs, vases, mugs/cups, coasters and a vintage inspired range of jewellery using her own free machine embroidered drawings.
Gwen also runs workshops both for adults and in schools/universities and has many years of teaching experience from Primary age level up to Post Graduate.
Gwen works from her studio at Brougham Hall, just outside Penrith.
